Pull-Up

Hang from the bar with an overhand grip and pull your chin over it, then lower to straight arms.

Pull-Up, illustrated

How to do it

Setup

Hang from the bar, overhand grip a little wider than shoulders, arms straight, shoulders active.

Steps

  1. Start the pull by driving the shoulder blades down.
  2. Pull the chin over the bar, elbows toward the ribs.
  3. Lower to straight arms with control.

Common mistakes

Kipping with the legs: momentum robs the lats; hang quiet. Chin poking for the bar: bring the chest up instead. Dropping from the top: the lowering is half the exercise.

Breathing

Exhale on the pull, inhale on the way down.
