Wide-Grip Pull-Up

Hands well outside the shoulders; the range shortens and the lats take the larger share.

Wide-Grip Pull-Up, illustrated

How to do it

Setup

Hands well outside the shoulders, overhand, dead hang.

Steps

  1. Pull the chest toward the bar, blades leading.
  2. Elbows drive down and out.
  3. Lower to the full hang.

Common mistakes

Grip so wide the range dies: wide, not crucified. Chin-chasing: the chest rises, the chin follows. Kipping: strict; the width is hard enough.

Breathing

Exhale on the pull, inhale lowering.
