Kipping Pull-Up

A swing from the hips carries you over the bar; a conditioning movement, not a strength one – the rep count is not comparable to a strict pull-up.

Kipping Pull-Up, illustrated

How to do it

Setup

Dead hang, shoulders active; space in front and behind the bar.

Steps

  1. Swing to an arch, then a hollow, from the shoulders.
  2. Drive the hips and pull as the swing peaks.
  3. Push away at the top and drop back into the rhythm.

Common mistakes

Kipping without strict strength: earn strict pull-ups FIRST; the swing multiplies force on the shoulders. Legs kicking randomly: the arch-hollow rhythm is the engine. Ripping off the bar at the bottom: controlled catch, active shoulders.

Breathing

Find a rhythm with the swing; never held.
