Headbanger

At the top of a pull-up, push the body back away from the bar until the arms are nearly straight, then pull back in, the chin at bar height the whole time.

How to do it

Setup

At the top of a pull-up, chin over the bar, grip shoulder-width, legs slightly forward.

Steps

  1. Push the body back from the bar, arms extending forward at chin height.
  2. Stop just short of straight arms without dropping.
  3. Pull the chest back in to the bar and repeat.

Common mistakes

Sinking lower as the arms extend: the chin stays level with the bar. Swinging the legs for momentum: move with the arms and back only. Trying it before strict pull-ups are solid: the pull-up comes first.

Breathing

Exhale pulling in, inhale pushing away.
