Standing Y Raise
A shoulder warm-up with no weight: standing tall, the straight arms rise forward and up into a Y overhead, the blades drawn down, then lower slowly.
How to do it
Setup
Standing tall, feet hip-width, knees soft, arms by the sides, thumbs pointing forward.
Steps
- Raise the straight arms forward and up into a wide Y above the head, thumbs leading.
- Keep the shoulders down and the ribs from flaring at the top.
- Lower slowly to the sides and repeat at an even pace.
Common mistakes
Shrugging as the arms go up: draw the blades down first. Arching the lower back to get the arms higher: stop where the ribs stay down. Swinging the arms up fast: lift and lower under control.
Breathing
Exhale on the raise, inhale lowering.
