Weighted Plate Standing Lateral Raise

The standing lateral raise with a small plate in each hand, gripped by the rim, which asks more of the fingers than a handle does.

How to do it

Setup

Standing, feet hip-width, a small plate in each hand held by its rim at the sides of the thighs.

Steps

  1. Raise the plates out to the sides to shoulder height on straight arms.
  2. Pause with the plates level and the grip tight.
  3. Lower them slowly to the thighs.

Common mistakes

A loose grip on the rim: squeeze the plates or pick smaller ones. Plates tipping forward at the top: wrists straight, plates level. Swinging them up from the hips: start each rep from a dead stop.

Breathing

Exhale opening the arms, inhale lowering.
