Wall Angels

Back and arms against a wall, slide the hands up and down while keeping the wrists and the lower back in contact; slow and small.

Wall Angels, illustrated

How to do it

Setup

Back against a wall, feet a step out, arms bent with the backs of the hands touching it.

Steps

  1. Press the lower back, the elbows and the wrists into the wall.
  2. Slide the hands up as far as all of that stays in contact.
  3. Slide back down, keeping the elbows close to the wall.
  4. Move slowly – the contact is the exercise, not the height.

Common mistakes

Arching the lower back off the wall to reach higher: stop where the contact stops. Wrists drifting away from the wall. Rushing; the slow travel is what teaches the shoulders.

Breathing

Exhale sliding up, inhale coming down.
