One-Arm Lat Stretch

Holding an upright with one hand at hip height, the hips sink back and away until the side of the back lengthens; held for time, one side at a time.

How to do it

Setup

Facing a sturdy upright, one hand gripping it at hip height, feet hip-width and a step back.

Steps

  1. Push the hips back until the arm is straight and the torso near parallel.
  2. Shift the hips away from the gripping hand until the lat stretches.
  3. Hold and breathe, then switch arms.

Common mistakes

Rounding the back to go deeper: keep it long and let the hips move. Shrugging the shoulder to the ear: let the arm hang from the shoulder blade. Bouncing into the stretch: sink in slowly and hold.

Breathing

Slow and even through the hold.
