Standing Reach Up Back Rotation Stretch

A standing side reach with the hands clasped overhead, the trunk leaning to one side with only a little turn; the raised arms lengthen the side of the back.

How to do it

Setup

Feet shoulder-width, both arms straight up above the head, hands clasped.

Steps

  1. Reach up tall, then lean the arms and trunk to one side.
  2. Let the shoulders turn only a little with the lean.
  3. Hold, return to the middle and lean the other way.

Common mistakes

Arms drifting forward: keep them beside the ears. Twisting the shoulders round: it is a lean with a slight turn, not a rotation. Hips sliding out to the side: keep them over the feet.

Breathing

Exhale into the lean, then breathe evenly in the hold.
