Standing Side Stretch

Both arms straight overhead with the hands together, the trunk bends to one side and then the other; the long arms stretch the whole side from the hands to the hip.

How to do it

Setup

Standing tall, feet a little wider than hip-width, both arms straight overhead, one hand holding the other.

Steps

  1. Reach up, then bend sideways, the arms staying by the ears.
  2. Stop where the side pulls, the hips still over the feet.
  3. Hold and breathe, then come up through the middle and bend the other way.

Common mistakes

Arms drifting forward of the head: keep them by the ears. Hips swinging out to the side: they stay stacked over the feet. Collapsing into the lower side: lengthen up before you bend.

Breathing

Slow and even through the hold.
