Extra Decline Sit-Up

The decline sit-up on a bench set steeper than usual; the extra slope makes the first part of the curl, off the pad, the hardest.

How to do it

Setup

Feet hooked high on a decline bench set to one of its steepest notches, arms crossed on the chest.

Steps

  1. Curl the head and shoulders off the pad first.
  2. Keep curling until the torso is upright over the hips.
  3. Lower slowly; the slope pulls hardest near the bottom.

Common mistakes

Jumping to the steepest angle too soon: master the usual decline first. Heaving up with a flat back: curl, one vertebra after another. Letting the slope drop you: resist all the way down.

Breathing

Exhale sitting up, inhale rolling down.
