Dumbbell Straight-Arm Overhead Swing

Arms straight out at shoulder height with the palms up, sweep the dumbbells up until they meet overhead and back to the T; the arms never drop below the shoulders.

How to do it

Setup

Standing tall, feet hip-width, arms straight out to the sides at shoulder height, palms up, a light dumbbell in each hand.

Steps

  1. Raise the arms in a wide arc until the dumbbells touch above the head.
  2. Lower them back out to shoulder height, no lower.
  3. Keep the palms turned up and the ribs down throughout.

Common mistakes

Dropping the arms below shoulder height between reps: the T is the bottom of the range. Bending the elbows to lift the bells: arms long, lighter bells. Swinging with momentum: move slowly both ways.

Breathing

Exhale on the raise, inhale lowering.
