Dumbbell Lateral Raise

Raise the dumbbells out to the sides to shoulder height with slightly bent arms, then lower slowly.

How to do it

Setup

Stand tall, dumbbells at the sides, elbows very slightly bent.

Steps

  1. Raise the arms out to the sides to shoulder height.
  2. Lead with the elbows, hands below them at the top.
  3. Lower slower than you lifted.

Common mistakes

Swinging the torso: lighter bells, quiet body. Shrugging as you raise: the traps steal the rep; blades down. Hands above the elbows: the delts unload; elbows lead.

Breathing

Exhale opening the arms, inhale lowering.
