Machine Lateral Raise, illustrated

How to do it

Setup

Seated, pads against the upper arms, hands light on the grips.

Steps

  1. Press the pads out and up to shoulder height.
  2. Lead with the ELBOWS into the pads.
  3. Lower under control without the stack resting.

Common mistakes

Pushing with the hands: the pads want the upper arms; hands relax. Rising past shoulder height: the traps take over; stop level. Shrugging: down first, then out.

Breathing

Exhale opening the arms, inhale lowering.
