Barbell Upright Row, illustrated

How to do it

Setup

Bar at the thighs, grip shoulder-width, stand tall.

Steps

  1. Pull the bar up along the body, elbows leading above the wrists.
  2. Stop at chest height or where the shoulders stay happy.
  3. Lower along the body.

Common mistakes

Narrow grip pulled to the chin: impingement territory; shoulder-width to the chest. Bar drifting forward: it brushes the shirt. Heaving with the hips: strict; the row is small.

Breathing

Exhale on the pull, inhale lowering.
