Smith Machine Upright Row

The upright row on the Smith bar, which runs in a fixed track and stays close to the body without being balanced.

How to do it

Setup

Standing close behind the Smith bar at mid-thigh, overhand grip about shoulder-width.

Steps

  1. Turn the bar off its hooks and stand tall.
  2. Pull the bar up to chest height, elbows leading.
  3. Lower to the thighs; hook the bar after the set.

Common mistakes

Standing too far from the bar: the track pulls you forward; stand close. Grip narrowed and pulled to the chin: shoulder-width, and the bar stops at the chest. Elbows lagging behind the wrists: the elbows lead all the way.

Breathing

Exhale on the pull, inhale lowering.
