Close-Grip Push-Up

Hands under the shoulders or narrower, elbows tracking close to the body; the narrow base shifts the work onto the triceps.

Close-Grip Push-Up, illustrated

How to do it

Setup

Hands under the shoulders or slightly narrower, elbows tracking along the ribs.

Steps

  1. Lower with the elbows brushing the body.
  2. Chest to just above the hands.
  3. Press to lockout, finishing with the triceps.

Common mistakes

Elbows flaring under fatigue: the tuck IS the exercise. Hands too narrow too soon: narrower is a progression, not a start. Sag at the hips: plank rules apply.

Breathing

Inhale down, exhale pressing.
