Bicycle Crunch with Raised Legs

The bicycle crunch with the legs held high, so the hip flexors work less and the abs more.

Bicycle Crunch with Raised Legs, illustrated

How to do it

Setup

On your back, thighs vertical, shins parallel to the floor, hands behind the head.

Steps

  1. Bring one elbow toward the opposite knee.
  2. Extend the other leg only to where the lower back stays down.
  3. Alternate slowly, legs staying HIGH.

Common mistakes

Legs dropping low: the raised version exists to quiet the hip flexors; keep them up. Elbow flapping: the shoulder rotates. Racing: slow keeps the obliques honest.

Breathing

Exhale on each rotation.
