Bench Pull-Ups

The pull-up with the heels resting on a bench in front and the knees bent; the feet take part of the weight while the back does the pulling.

How to do it

Setup

Overhand grip on the bar, a bench in front at knee height, heels on the bench, knees bent, arms straight.

Steps

  1. Pull the chin over the bar, pressing only lightly through the heels.
  2. Hold the top for a moment, blades pulled down.
  3. Lower to straight arms with control.

Common mistakes

Pushing up with the legs: the heels only steady the body; the back lifts. Bench so close the knees jam into it: set it a leg's length in front. Stopping short of the bar: the chin clears it every rep.

Breathing

Exhale on the pull, inhale on the way down.
