Wide Hand Push-Up

The push-up with the hands set well outside the shoulders; the wider base shortens the press and puts more of it on the chest.

How to do it

Setup

High plank, hands about one and a half shoulder-widths apart, fingers forward or turned slightly out.

Steps

  1. Lower the chest between the hands to just above the floor.
  2. Keep the forearms close to vertical at the bottom.
  3. Press back up to straight arms.

Common mistakes

Hands so wide the shoulders complain: bring them in until the forearms stand upright. Elbows flat out at 90°: even here they angle back a little. Short reps: the chest still goes all the way down.

Breathing

Inhale down, exhale on the press.
