Walking Backward on a Treadmill

Walking backwards on a slow belt, facing away from the console; the front of the thighs and the shins work harder than in forward walking.

How to do it

Setup

Belt stopped, standing with the back to the console, hands on the side rails.

Steps

  1. Start the belt slow and step backwards, toe first.
  2. Roll from the ball of the foot onto the heel with short steps.
  3. Let go of the rails only once the rhythm is steady; log the time.

Common mistakes

Starting at a normal walking speed: begin slower and build. Reaching far back with each step: short steps land under the hips. Looking down at the feet: eyes ahead, chest up.

Breathing

Easy and steady.
