Supported Headstand Yoga Pose Sirsasana
An inversion balanced on the forearms and the crown of the head, the fingers laced round the back of the head and the body rising straight above; held for time.
How to do it
Setup
Kneeling, forearms on a folded mat shoulder-width apart, fingers laced, the crown of the head in the cup of the hands.
Steps
- Press the forearms down and lift the hips, straightening the legs.
- Walk the feet in until the hips stack over the shoulders.
- Raise the legs slowly with bent knees, then straighten them up.
- Hold, then lower the same way and rest in Child's Pose.
Common mistakes
Weight sinking into the head and neck: press the forearms down so the shoulders carry you. Kicking or jumping up: raise the legs slowly, bent first. Tipping out of the pose: come down the way you went up, with a wall behind you while learning.
Breathing
Slow and even through the hold.
