Standing One-Arm Chest Stretch

One straight arm out at shoulder height with the palm on a door frame, the chest eased forward; each side of the chest stretches in turn.

How to do it

Setup

Standing in a doorway, one arm straight out to the side at shoulder height, palm on the frame, free hand on the hip.

Steps

  1. Keep the arm straight and the palm fixed on the frame.
  2. Ease the chest forward until the front of the shoulder and the chest stretch.
  3. Hold and breathe, then switch arms.

Common mistakes

Bending the elbow: the straight arm is this stretch; keep it long. Shoulder creeping up to the ear: draw it down and back first. Leaning in until the front of the shoulder aches: ease off to a pull across the chest.

Breathing

Slow and even through the hold.
