Standing Hip Out Abductor Stretch

One hand on a bench back, legs crossed, the hips push out away from the support until the outer hip of the far leg stretches.

How to do it

Setup

Side-on to a bench back, near hand on it, the far leg crossed behind the near one.

Steps

  1. Bend the near knee a little and keep the crossed leg straight.
  2. Push the hips out away from the bench until the outside of the far hip stretches.
  3. Hold and breathe, then turn round and switch sides.

Common mistakes

Pulling on the bench: the hand only steadies you. Hips sliding back instead of out: move them straight sideways. Bending the crossed leg: keep it long so the outer hip takes the stretch.

Breathing

Slow and even through the hold.
