Standing External Rotation Behind Back with Towel

A towel held taut behind the back at hip level slides from side to side, each hand in turn drawing it out as that shoulder turns outward.

How to do it

Setup

Standing tall, a towel held taut behind the back at hip level, one end in each hand, elbows slightly bent.

Steps

  1. Draw the towel out to one side, that hand moving away from the body.
  2. Keep the elbows by the sides and the towel taut.
  3. Slide it back across to the other side and repeat.

Common mistakes

Twisting the hips to move the towel: the pelvis stays square; the shoulders turn. Letting the towel go slack: keep a light pull between the hands. Shrugging the shoulders up: keep them low and the neck long.

Breathing

Steady throughout; never held.
