Smith Machine Deadlift

The bar runs on rails, so the pull is a straight line and balance stops being the limit.

How to do it

Setup

Bar on the rails at shin height, deadlift grip, back flat, bar close.

Steps

  1. Drive the floor away, dragging the bar up the legs.
  2. Lock out with the hips.
  3. Lower along the rails with control.

Common mistakes

Standing where the rail path pulls you forward: align so the bar brushes the legs. Yanking off the hooks: set tension first. Hyperextending at the top: stand tall, no lean.

Breathing

Inhale at the bottom, exhale after lockout.
