Barbell Deadlift from Blocks

The deadlift with the plates resting on blocks, so the bar starts higher and the pull is shorter; the heavier lockout gets the work.

How to do it

Setup

Plates on blocks of equal height, bar over the mid-foot, hips back, back flat, arms straight.

Steps

  1. Take the slack out of the bar, then drive the floor away.
  2. Lock out with the hips and knees together, standing tall.
  3. Lower the bar back onto the blocks with a flat back.

Common mistakes

Blocks uneven or unstable: the bar rocks off them; set matching, solid blocks. Jerking the bar off the blocks: pull the slack out first. Leaning back at lockout: stand tall, glutes squeezed.

Breathing

Brace before each pull, exhale at lockout.
