Barbell Deadlift against Chains

The deadlift with chains hung from the bar's ends: links pile on the floor at the start and lift off as the bar rises, so the load grows toward lockout.

How to do it

Setup

Chains hung evenly from both sleeves, bar over the mid-foot, hips back, back flat, grip just outside the legs.

Steps

  1. Brace and pull the bar up close to the legs.
  2. Keep driving as the chains come off the floor.
  3. Lower under control until the plates touch the floor.

Common mistakes

Chains hanging unevenly: the bar tips to one side; match both ends. Slowing down as the chains lift: accelerate through the top. Hitching the bar up the thighs at lockout: hips and knees finish together.

Breathing

Brace before each pull, exhale at lockout.
