Barbell Deadlift from Deficit

The deadlift standing on a low platform, so the bar starts below the feet and the hardest part, the break off the floor, gets longer.

How to do it

Setup

On a low platform, bar over the mid-foot, grip just outside the legs, hips lower than usual, back flat.

Steps

  1. Pull the slack out of the bar, then push the platform away.
  2. Keep the bar on the shins and thighs all the way up.
  3. Lock out with the hips, then lower along the same line.

Common mistakes

Rounding to reach the lower bar: if the back cannot stay flat, the platform is too high. Hips rising first out of the deep start: chest and hips move together. Loading it like a floor pull: go lighter than your deadlift.

Breathing

Big breath and brace at the top, exhale after the lockout or between reps.
