Barbell 2/3 Deadlift

The deadlift cut short of lockout: from the floor the bar rises to mid-thigh, about two-thirds of the way, and goes back down while the hips stay hinged.

How to do it

Setup

Feet hip-width under the bar, hands just outside the knees, shoulders over the bar, back flat.

Steps

  1. Pull the bar off the floor and up past the knees.
  2. Stop at mid-thigh with the torso still leaning forward.
  3. Lower to the floor and pull again without standing tall.

Common mistakes

Standing all the way up out of habit: the rep ends at mid-thigh. Rounding at the turnaround: the back stays flat at every height. Bouncing the plates off the floor: touch down, then pull.

Breathing

Inhale at the floor, exhale at mid-thigh.
