Sitting Neck Flexion Stretch

Seated with the hands on the thighs, the chin sinks to the chest and the upper back rounds after it; the neck and upper back lengthen together.

How to do it

Setup

Seated on a stool or bench, feet flat, hands resting on the thighs.

Steps

  1. Drop the chin slowly toward the chest.
  2. Let the upper back round forward after the head, the hands sliding a little down the thighs.
  3. Hold and breathe, then roll up slowly, the head coming up last.

Common mistakes

Pulling the head down with the hands: here they rest on the thighs and the head's weight does it. Collapsing the lower back too: the round starts at the neck and stops below the shoulder blades. Sitting up head first: roll up through the spine and lift the head last.

Breathing

Slow and even through the hold.
