Sitting Lateral Side Stretch

Seated on a stool with the arms hanging, the trunk leans to one side and holds; the seat keeps the hips from shifting.

How to do it

Setup

Seated tall on a stool, feet flat and apart, arms hanging at the sides.

Steps

  1. Lean the trunk straight to one side, the lower hand reaching toward the floor.
  2. Keep both sit bones heavy on the seat.
  3. Hold and breathe, then sit up and switch sides.

Common mistakes

One hip lifting off the seat: both stay down, or the stretch leaks out. Twisting the chest toward the floor: keep it facing forward. Collapsing into the bend: lengthen up first, then lean.

Breathing

Slow and even through the hold.
