Seated Lower Back Stretch

Seated on a bench, one arm reaching straight up, turn the trunk toward the hand holding the bench beside you, then back.

How to do it

Setup

Seated tall on a bench, feet flat, one hand gripping its edge beside the hip, the other arm straight overhead.

Steps

  1. Turn the chest toward the gripping hand, the raised arm staying tall.
  2. Keep both sit bones on the bench as the waist turns.
  3. Come back to the front; finish the side, then switch arms.

Common mistakes

Hips turning along: the sit bones stay planted. Leaning back on the gripping arm: sit tall; the arm only steadies. Dropping the raised arm: keep it reaching up to lengthen the side.

Breathing

Exhale on each twist, inhale returning.
