Rope Climb

Climb the rope with a foot lock (J-hook or S-wrap) doing the work, hands only holding; descend hand over hand, never sliding.

Rope Climb, illustrated

How to do it

Setup

Rope hanging free; grip it high with both hands, one above the other, and jump the feet to it.

Steps

  1. Wrap the foot lock – J-hook or S-wrap – and pinch the rope between the feet.
  2. Stand up through the legs and slide the hands up.
  3. Pull the knees up, re-set the lock, and stand again.
  4. Descend hand over hand with the lock loosened, never sliding.

Common mistakes

Climbing with the arms: the lock and the legs lift you; the hands only hold. Sliding down: the rope burns; loosen the lock and lower hand over hand. Climbing beyond what the descent can control: the way down is the dangerous half; earn it first.

Breathing

Exhale standing up, inhale as the knees come up.
