Reaching Up Shoulder Stretch

One hand behind the back slides up the spine toward the shoulder blades; the shoulder turns in and its front and back stretch.

How to do it

Setup

Standing tall, one hand behind the lower back, palm facing out.

Steps

  1. Slide the hand up the spine toward the shoulder blades.
  2. Stop where the shoulder pulls, chest and shoulders square.
  3. Hold and breathe, then lower the hand slowly and switch arms.

Common mistakes

Jerking the hand higher: the rotator cuff is often tight; ease up slowly. Shoulder rolling forward as the hand climbs: keep the chest open. Leaning to one side: stand square, only the arm moves.

Breathing

Slow and even through the hold.
