Machine Belt Deadlift (Straight Bar)

The belt-machine deadlift with a straight bar held overhand at shoulder width; the wider grip puts the hands outside the knees.

How to do it

Setup

On the platform facing the machine, the straight bar gripped overhand outside the knees, hips low, back flat.

Steps

  1. Brace, then stand up with the bar tracking the thighs.
  2. Open the hips fully at the top, shoulders back.
  3. Hinge and bend the knees to lower the bar to the shins.

Common mistakes

Bar drifting toward the machine: keep it brushing the legs. Shrugging the weight up: the arms stay long hooks. Knees drifting inward as the bar passes them: keep them over the toes.

Breathing

Inhale at the bottom, exhale after lockout.
