Lateral Shuffle

Low athletic stance, quick side steps a few metres one way and back; the feet never cross.

Lateral Shuffle, illustrated

How to do it

Setup

Low athletic stance, feet wider than the hips, chest up, weight on the balls of the feet.

Steps

  1. Push off the outside foot and shuffle a few metres sideways.
  2. Stay low the whole way; the feet never cross.
  3. Plant the outside foot and shuffle back the other way.

Common mistakes

Standing up between steps: the stance stays low or the legs stop working. Feet crossing: a shuffle keeps them apart, a cross is a run. Toes turning out: they point forward, the hips drive the step.

Breathing

Fast steady rhythm.
