Dumbbell Standing T-Spine Press

Standing tall, press two light dumbbells from behind the neck straight overhead; the upper back has to extend so the arms can finish in line with the ears.

How to do it

Setup

Standing tall, feet hip-width, two light dumbbells held horizontally behind the neck, elbows pointing out.

Steps

  1. Press the bells straight up until the arms are long overhead.
  2. Lift the chest as the arms rise, ribs kept down.
  3. Lower the bells back behind the neck slowly.

Common mistakes

Arching the lower back instead of the upper back: ribs down, glutes tight. Pushing the head forward to clear the bells: head tall, the bells travel behind it. Pain at the front of the shoulder with the bells behind the neck: start with them higher, or stop.

Breathing

Exhale pressing, inhale lowering.
