Dumbbell Standing Single-Arm Cross Raise

The cross-body raise with one dumbbell for the whole set, the free hand on the hip; it moves the bell up and across in front of the opposite shoulder.

How to do it

Setup

Standing tall, one dumbbell at the side, palm facing in, the free hand on the hip.

Steps

  1. Raise the bell up and across to shoulder height, arm almost straight.
  2. Pause with the bell in front of the opposite shoulder.
  3. Lower along the same line; finish the set, then switch arms.

Common mistakes

Leaning away from the working arm: stay upright, hand on the hip. Bending the elbow into a curl: keep it almost straight. Dropping the bell on the way down: lower as slowly as it rose.

Breathing

Exhale on the raise, inhale lowering.
