Dumbbell Standing Single-Arm Arnold Press

The standing Arnold press with one dumbbell; the load on one side makes the trunk resist a lean while the palm turns out on the way up.

How to do it

Setup

Standing, feet hip-width, one dumbbell in front of the shoulder with the palm facing you, the other hand on the hip.

Steps

  1. Press the bell up while turning the palm to face forward.
  2. Finish with the arm straight and the palm forward.
  3. Lower along the same turn; finish the side, then switch.

Common mistakes

Bending away from the bell: stand tall, hips level. Turning the hand after the press instead of during it: the turn and the press happen together. Letting the bell drift behind the head: finish it over the shoulder.

Breathing

Exhale on the press, inhale lowering.
