Dumbbell Standing Front Raise Above Head

The front raise carried on past shoulder height until the dumbbells are overhead; a longer arc than the usual raise, for shoulders that reach overhead freely.

How to do it

Setup

Standing tall, a dumbbell in each hand in front of the thighs, palms facing the body, arms straight.

Steps

  1. Raise the bells in front with straight arms, past the shoulders to overhead.
  2. Stop where the arms are beside the ears, without arching.
  3. Lower along the same arc slowly.

Common mistakes

Arching the lower back to get the bells higher: stop where the ribs stay down. Swinging them up from the hips: start each rep still. Heavy bells: the straight arm is a long lever; go light.

Breathing

Exhale on the raise, inhale lowering.
