Dumbbell Standing Front and Lateral Raise

One rep is two raises: both bells go up in front to shoulder height and down, then out to the sides and down; front and side delts share the set.

How to do it

Setup

Standing tall, feet hip-width, bells at the sides of the thighs, palms facing in.

Steps

  1. Raise both bells in front of you to shoulder height and lower them.
  2. Now raise them out to the sides to shoulder height and lower them.
  3. Keep the arms long and the trunk still; the two raises make one rep.

Common mistakes

Swinging from one raise straight into the next: let the bells stop at the thighs between them. The side raise drifting forward: the arms travel straight out, in line with the shoulders. The second raise sagging lower than the first: both finish level with the shoulders.

Breathing

Exhale on each raise, inhale lowering.
