Dumbbell Standing Arnold Press

The Arnold press done standing: the bells turn from palms-in at the chin to palms-forward overhead while the legs and trunk hold the body still.

How to do it

Setup

Standing tall, feet hip-width, bells in front of the shoulders with the palms facing you, elbows forward.

Steps

  1. Press up, turning the palms out so they face forward at the top.
  2. Lock out over the shoulders without leaning back.
  3. Lower and turn the palms back toward you on the way down.

Common mistakes

Leaning back to finish the turn: standing, the lower back pays for it; ribs down, glutes tight. Turning the bells all at the bottom: spread the rotation over the whole press. Knees bouncing to help the bells up: legs still; this is a strict press.

Breathing

Exhale on the press, inhale lowering.
