Dumbbell Alternate Shoulder Press

The standing dumbbell press taken in turns: one bell rises to lockout while its partner stays racked at the shoulder, then they swap.

How to do it

Setup

Standing, feet hip-width, both bells at the shoulders with the palms forward and the elbows out.

Steps

  1. Press one bell straight up, the other held still at the shoulder.
  2. Bring it back down to the shoulder under control.
  3. Press the other bell, trading sides every rep.

Common mistakes

Hips shifting toward the pressing side: brace the trunk and keep the pelvis level. Waiting bell sinking toward the chest: hold it up at the shoulder, elbow out. Arching the lower back at lockout: ribs down, glutes tight.

Breathing

Exhale pressing, inhale lowering.
