Dumbbell Single-Arm Shrug

The dumbbell shrug one side at a time, the free hand on the hip; with one bell the trunk has to stay upright instead of leaning away from it.

How to do it

Setup

Standing tall, a dumbbell hanging at one side, arm long, the free hand on the hip.

Steps

  1. Shrug the loaded shoulder straight up toward the ear.
  2. Hold the top for a beat without leaning away.
  3. Lower the shoulder all the way down; switch sides after the set.

Common mistakes

Leaning away from the bell to lift it higher: stand straight; the shoulder moves, not the trunk. Rolling the shoulder in a circle: straight up, straight down. Bending the elbow to help: the arm only hangs.

Breathing

Exhale on the shrug, inhale lowering.
