Dumbbell Single-Arm Leaning Lateral Raise

Holding an upright and leaning away from it, the free arm raises the bell; the lean loads the start of the arc.

How to do it

Setup

Side-on to a rack upright, near hand on it, feet together, body leaning away.

Steps

  1. Raise the bell out until the arm lines up with the shoulders.
  2. Keep the lean fixed; only the arm moves.
  3. Lower slowly; switch arms after the set.

Common mistakes

Pulling the body upright with the holding arm: the lean stays set. Hand rising above the elbow: the elbow leads. Going heavy: in the lean even a light bell is hard.

Breathing

Exhale raising, inhale lowering.
