Dumbbell Single-Arm Curl with Isometric Hold

One arm holds its dumbbell still with the elbow at a right angle while the other arm curls through full reps; then the arms trade jobs.

How to do it

Setup

Standing tall, a dumbbell in each hand, one arm bent to a right angle and held, the other hanging straight.

Steps

  1. Curl the straight arm through full reps.
  2. Keep the other forearm level and still.
  3. Switch the holding and the curling arm for the next set.

Common mistakes

Holding arm sinking as it tires: keep the forearm level; the hold is half the set. Leaning away from the moving bell: stand square. Shoulders creeping up: keep them down and relaxed.

Breathing

Steady through the hold, exhale on each curl.
