Dumbbell Deadlift

Dumbbells at the sides or in front of the thighs; the shorter range and free path suit a home setup.

How to do it

Setup

Bells at the sides of the shins in a hinge, back flat, shoulders over the bells.

Steps

  1. Drive the floor away – hips and chest rise together.
  2. Keep the bells close to the legs.
  3. Lock out with the hips; hinge back down.

Common mistakes

Squatting the lift: it is a hinge; hips travel back, not down. Bells drifting forward: brush the legs. Rounding at the bottom: reset the flat back every rep.

Breathing

Inhale at the bottom, exhale after lockout.
