Close-Grip Bench Press

Grip inside shoulder width, elbows close to the body; lower to the lower chest and press up.

Close-Grip Bench Press, illustrated

How to do it

Setup

On the bench, grip shoulder-width or slightly inside, blades pinched, feet planted.

Steps

  1. Lower the bar to the lower chest, elbows brushing the body.
  2. Touch without bouncing.
  3. Press to lockout, finishing with the triceps.

Common mistakes

Grip too narrow: wrists fold; shoulder-width is close enough. Elbows flaring: keep them tucked along the ribs. Bar drifting toward the neck: it lands low and presses back up.

Breathing

Inhale down, exhale on the press.
