Child's Pose

Child's Pose, illustrated

How to do it

Setup

Kneel with the big toes together and the knees about mat-width apart, sitting back toward the heels.

Steps

  1. Walk the hands forward and lower the chest between the thighs.
  2. Rest the forehead on the floor, or on a fist if it does not reach.
  3. Reach the fingertips away to lengthen the sides of the back.
  4. Let the shoulders drop away from the ears.

Common mistakes

Sitting up off the heels: take the knees wider instead. Shrugging the shoulders to the ears; reach long and drop them. Forcing the forehead down on stiff hips rather than supporting it.

Breathing

Breathe into the back of the ribs and let each exhale sink you lower.
